Iowa Man Jorgensen Sentenced in Meth-Distribution Ring

Dwight Chris Jorgensen, 49, of Grafton, Iowa, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 168 months for his role in a sprawling methamphetamine distribution conspiracy. The conviction marks the end of a years-long investigation into a regional drug network that flooded rural Iowa with high-purity meth.

Jorgensen pleaded guilty on August 28, 2017, to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. Court records show he regularly received shipments of the drug in quarter-pound, half-pound, and full-pound quantities, which he then funneled to a network of buyers across northern Iowa and into southern Minnesota.

During a February 2017 raid on Jorgensen’s residence, shop, and Jeep Cherokee, law enforcement seized a significant stash of methamphetamine, a loaded Taurus 9 mm handgun, and $2,743.00 in cash. The weapon, tied to drug trafficking, added a dangerous edge to the case, underscoring the violent potential of such operations.

Prosecutors proved that Jorgensen distributed more than 1,500 grams of actual, pure methamphetamine during the course of the conspiracy—a weight that triggered enhanced federal sentencing guidelines. The amount reflects not just the scale of his operation, but the devastating reach of the drug in small communities.

He was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade, who imposed a $100 special assessment and a mandatory 5-year term of supervised release following his prison term. With no parole in the federal system, Jorgensen will serve at least 85% of his sentence before possible release.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jack Lammers and investigated by a multi-agency task force including the Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Worth County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Mower County Minnesota Sheriff’s Office, Austin Minnesota Police Department, and Division of Intelligence. Jorgensen remains in U.S. Marshals custody pending transfer to federal prison. Case file 17-3027 is available at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl. Follow @USAO_NDIA for updates.
