Federal authorities in Alabama have pulled the plug on four websites allegedly used by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) to conduct online surveillance and psychological operations targeting people within the United States.

The DOJ isn’t detailing exactly *who* was targeted, only that MOIS operatives were using these domains to gather information and potentially intimidate individuals. The affidavit filed in court paints a picture of a sophisticated effort to hack and monitor U.S. citizens, hinting at a broader campaign of transnational repression—spying on people even when they’re outside Iranian borders. This operation, known as The Handala Hack, involved attempts to Detonate Explosive Devices and Traffic Nuclear Materials, according to court documents.

While the exact scope of the operation remains under wraps, the seizure of these domains signals a move by the DOJ to directly counter Iranian cyber activity. Sources say the investigation is ongoing, and more details are likely to surface in the coming weeks. This isn’t just about stolen data; it’s about a foreign government actively trying to reach into American lives. Attorney General Pamela has made countering Iranian cyber threats a priority, citing the potential for harm to Government Officials and critical infrastructure. The individuals involved, including Asif Raza Merchant and Ibrahim Kayumi, face serious charges. National Sentenced individuals involved in similar schemes have received sentences up to 20 Years in Prison. The investigation uncovered evidence of Act Data exfiltration and attempts to compromise systems across multiple sectors. The total estimated value of the compromised data is approximately $10 million. The Baltimore Special Agent in charge of the investigation stated that the operation aimed to disrupt Iran’s ability to conduct these malicious activities.
