IronRod Health Hit With $673K Fraud Settlement

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Another healthcare outfit caught with its hand in the till. IronRod Health, officially Beyond Reps, Inc. d/b/a IronRod Health and Cardiac Monitoring Services, will be shelling out $673,200.92 to settle allegations of ripping off federal health programs, U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today. The feds say the Phoenix, Arizona-based company was filing false claims for remote cardiac monitoring services.

The scheme, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Coriell, ran from January 1, 2018, through April 30, 2021. IronRod allegedly used technicians without the proper credentials to read cardiac monitors. That’s right – potentially putting patients at risk while padding their pockets. But it didn’t stop there. Between June 1, 2018, and August 20, 2018, the company allegedly lied about performing services in New York State to snag higher Medicare reimbursements. A classic bait and switch.

“Providers that seek payment from federal health programs are required to follow laws meant to protect beneficiaries, as well as to protect the integrity of those programs,” Ross stated, a standard line, but a necessary one. “Our office is committed to pursuing cases against any provider that cuts corners or seeks to obtain payments for which they are not entitled.” Translation: we’re watching you, healthcare vultures.

This wasn’t just a government investigation, though. A whistleblower, Coleen DeGroat, stepped forward, filing a qui tam lawsuit – meaning she’s entitled to a cut of the $673,200.92. The case, United States ex rel. DeGroat v. Beyond Reps, Inc. et al., 20-cv-1262 (W.D.N.Y.), highlights the importance of individuals willing to expose fraud, even when it means taking on a powerful corporation. Good for her.

The feds weren’t alone in cracking down on IronRod. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General played a key role in the investigation, demonstrating a coordinated effort to tackle healthcare fraud. It’s a small victory in a much larger war against those who prioritize profits over patient care.
