LAREDO, Texas – A federal grand jury has indicted Isaac Hernandez, a 25-year-old U.S. citizen residing in Mexico, for trafficking handguns into Mexico under the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act. This marks the first time someone has been indicted under the new law, part of the broader Safer Communities Act passed on June 25.
The charges against Hernandez allege that he purchased a large number of firearms and transported them to Mexico. Between January 21, 2020, and July 11, 2022, Hernandez allegedly purchased a total of 231 handguns in calibers of 9mm, .380, and .22. His arrest took place on July 11, 2022, as he was traveling south on U.S. Interstate 35 towards the port of entry in Laredo.
At the time of his arrest, authorities discovered 17 firearms hidden in his car. The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, has been ongoing since Hernandez was found to be purchasing a large number of firearms. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Makens is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. Hernandez is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
Isaac Hernandez, a U.S. citizen residing in Mexico, faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. His exact criminal charges are trafficking in firearms, as defined under the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act.
LAREDO, Texas, was the site of the arrest on July 11, 2022. Hernandez’s case is a significant development in the enforcement of the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act, a new law aimed at combating firearms trafficking.
The investigation into Hernandez’s activities has revealed a concerning trend of firearms trafficking into Mexico. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of enforcing laws aimed at preventing the illicit flow of firearms.
