An Española man has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for brutally attacking and strangulating his dating partner in 2023.
Isiah Gutierrez-Arquero, 30, an enrolled member of the Santa Clara Pueblo, pleaded guilty to assault by strangulation and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The heinous assault took place in the early morning hours of September 21, 2023, when Gutierrez-Arquero punched and kicked his victim, Jane Doe, threw her against a wall, sat on her chest, and strangled her with both hands during a prolonged beating that lasted several hours.
As a result of the assault, Jane Doe sustained serious bodily injuries to her head, torso, and extremities.
Gutierrez-Arquero will serve 46 months in prison, with no possibility of parole in the federal system. Upon his release from prison, he will be subject to three years of supervised release.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary C. Jones is prosecuting the case.
Isiah Gutierrez-Arquero’s sentence is a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
This case is a stark example of the severity of domestic violence and the need for justice to be served.
The court recommended that Gutierrez-Arquero complete the Residential Drug Abuse Program, the Bureau of Prisons’ most intensive treatment program, upon his release from prison.
