Israel Ramirez, Armed Robbery, Maryland 2021

Israel Ramirez, a 29-year-old man from Burtonsville, Maryland, has been sentenced to 17 years in federal prison for his role in a string of armed robberies that took place in 2021. According to court documents, Ramirez was convicted of robbing an armored truck, two banks, and a convenience store.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang, who also ordered Ramirez to serve five years of supervised release after his prison term is complete. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron, along with several law enforcement officials.

According to the investigation, Ramirez committed the armed robbery of a convenience store in Laurel, Maryland on July 4, 2021. During the robbery, Ramirez brandished a firearm and fired it into a cigarette display behind the register. He returned to the store on July 12, 2021, and demanded cash from an employee.

Later on July 12, 2021, Ramirez followed an armored truck that had recently conducted a cash drop/pickup at a nearby bank. He brandished a gun and demanded the deposit bag from the driver, who gave it to him. Ramirez then fired a shot at the driver and fled the scene.

On November 4, 2021 and December 3, 2021, Ramirez robbed two banks in Silver Spring, Maryland. In each robbery, he brandished a gun and demanded $10,000 from the bank employees. In the first robbery, Ramirez fired his gun into a wall as he left the bank. In the second robbery, he fired multiple shots into the ceiling of the bank.

A bank employee recognized Ramirez as a frequent customer of the bank during the second robbery, and a search warrant was executed at his residence that same day. Law enforcement recovered a black 9mm handgun that matched the description of the gun used by Ramirez during the robberies. Shell casings recovered from each of the robberies were also identified as coming from that gun, which was registered to Ramirez.

The investigation was made possible by investigative leads generated from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ National Integrated Ballistic Information Network. The case was a collaborative effort between several law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Montgomery County Police Department, the Prince George’s County Police Department, and the Laurel Police Department.

Israel Ramirez’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of the consequences for committing armed robbery. The case highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in bringing violent offenders to justice.
