Walmart Thief Gets 64 Months in Prison
Jabaree Mabrey, a 27-year-old California man, was sentenced to 64 months in prison for fraudulent use of an unauthorized access device. The sentencing took place on August 29, 2024, in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Mabrey was ordered to pay $690,484 in restitution, a staggering amount that reflects the scope of his crimes. The investigation revealed that Mabrey and his accomplice, Marlon Tigner, had been using a master key to steal from Walmart stores across the country.
The master key, accessible only to managers and front-end supervisors, was apparently universal to all Walmart registers, regardless of location. This allowed Mabrey and Tigner to commit their crimes with ease, stealing from stores spanning from Washington state to Massachusetts and from Texas to Wisconsin.
The investigation began after Marlon Tigner was arrested in Nebraska on state charges. Further investigation led to the identification of Mabrey as Tigner’s accomplice, and law enforcement was able to confirm that the two used the keys to steal from several Omaha Walmart stores.
The case was prosecuted in Nebraska after Tigner was contacted on a traffic stop in Lancaster County, identified as a suspect in the nationwide thefts, and master keys were recovered from his person. The Department of Homeland Security, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department, and numerous other law enforcement partners across the nation contributed to the investigation.
Jabaree Mabrey’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting sensitive information and the consequences of using unauthorized access devices. After his release from prison, Mabrey will begin a 3-year term of supervised release, a period during which he will be closely monitored by law enforcement.
According to the investigation, the total loss from stores was $690,484. This amount will be paid in restitution to Walmart, a victim of Mabrey’s crimes.
