A Jacksonville man has been slammed with 14 months behind bars for threatening the President of the United States.
Adam Ray Mouser, 40, of the 500 block of Brooklyn Avenue, was handed the sentence in U.S. District Court in Springfield, Illinois, for making threats against President Biden, his family, a former President, Secretary of State, and various Members of Congress.
According to the government, Mouser used social media to threaten violence against the President and his family, as well as multiple other high-ranking government officials.
At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Court Judge Colleen R. Lawless noted that the threats were repeated and escalated, even after the U.S. Secret Service visited Mouser’s home.
Mouser pleaded guilty to the charge on January 19, 2024, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen L. McNaught.
The United States Secret Service led the investigation, assisted by the United States Marshals Service and the Jacksonville Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger represented the government in the prosecution.
The statutory penalties for threats against the President of the United States include up to five years imprisonment, up to three years supervised release, up to a $250,000 fine, and a $100 mandatory special assessment.
Mouser has been in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since his arrest on August 28, 2023.
Judge Lawless emphasized the gravity of Mouser’s actions, saying ‘words do matter’ and that it’s common sense not to threaten to kill another individual.
