Prominent Mission Man Lands in Federal Prison for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury

A Mission man, Jacob Wright, 31, has been sentenced to three years and five months in federal prison for his role in a violent assault that left a victim with serious injuries.

Wright’s sentencing, which took place on April 21, 2026, was handed down by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte. In addition to the prison time, Wright was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

According to court documents, the assault occurred on April 23, 2025, at a residence south of Okreek, South Dakota. Wright and the victim had been consuming alcohol and an argument ensued, resulting in Wright striking the victim with a metal bar. The blow caused a skull fracture and subdural hematoma, requiring surgical intervention to relieve the pressure on the victim’s brain.

The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby VanDenBerg. The U.S. Attorney’s Office took the case due to the Major Crimes Act, which mandates that certain violent crimes committed in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court.

Wright was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. This incident serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that can result from violent behavior.
