Jaemere Scott, Escape from Federal Custody, Pennsylvania 2016

Jaemere Scott, 21, of Beaver, Pennsylvania, is back behind bars and facing federal charges after bolting from the Renewal Center, a court-ordered halfway house, on August 15, 2016, according to a federal indictment unsealed in Pittsburgh.

The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury, charges Scott with one count of escape from federal custody. At the time of his disappearance, Scott was serving part of a federal sentence for theft of firearms from a Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer—a crime that already placed him under strict supervision.

Scott was not granted authorized leave. He walked out of the Renewal Center that day and never returned. Federal authorities say his unauthorized departure triggered an immediate manhunt, culminating in his apprehension and current detention at Allegheny County Jail.

The charge against Scott carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the final sentence will hinge on the severity of the escape and Scott’s prior criminal history, which already includes serious federal weapons offenses.

Assistant United States Attorney Brendan T. Conway is handling the prosecution for the government. The United States Marshal Service led the investigation, tracking Scott down through coordinated regional law enforcement efforts.

An indictment is not a conviction. Jaemere Scott is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The case now moves toward arraignment and potential trial in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
