Convicted Felon Sentenced to 75 Months in Prison for Possessing a Firearm in Georgia
In a recent case, Jahmal Malcom McGee, a 24-year-old from Valdosta, GA, was sentenced to 75 months in prison for violating federal law by possessing a firearm. This decision was made by Senior United States District Court Judge Hugh Lawson on March 14, 2018.
McGee had previously pleaded guilty to the charge on October 12, 2017. As part of his plea, McGee admitted to being in possession of a stolen Glock, 9 mm, semi-automatic pistol and a thirty-round magazine containing thirty 9 mm cartridges. This discovery was made during a search incident to his arrest on April 25, 2017, when he was found to have an active warrant for violating his probation.
It is worth noting that McGee was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a 2013 conviction for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in Lowndes County Superior Court. He was also convicted of attempted armed robbery in Lowndes County in 2015.
The case was brought as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program, a successful initiative that aims to reduce violent crime by bringing together law enforcement agencies. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made it a priority to address the rising trend of violent crime in America.
“Yet another case of guns and drugs being found together on a convicted felon. Hopefully the sentence in this case, along with others prosecuted by my office and our state counterparts, will get the message out that criminals with guns will do more time because of their decision to go armed. That is the goal of the Project Safe Neighborhood Initiative, and it is being achieved,” said United States Attorney Charles E. Peeler.
The case was investigated by the FBI Task Force Officers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Valdosta Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Sonja B. Profit prosecuted the case for the United States. Questions concerning this case should be directed to Pamela Lightsey, Public Information Officer, United States Attorney’s Office, at (478) 621-2603.
