On May 3, 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a federal indictment against Jamal Love in the Illinois Northern District Federal District Court. Love, a 35-year-old resident of Chicago, Illinois, was charged with one count of carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2119.

The indictment alleged that Love had committed the crime on April 30, 2017, in the vicinity of 63rd Street and Stony Island Avenue in Chicago. According to the charges, Love had used a firearm to take control of a 2015 Acura TLX from the victim, causing serious bodily injury during the process.
