A Universal City man has been sentenced to one year confinement after pleading guilty to threatening the lives of a member of Congress and their family.
59-year-old James Amos Headley, a resident of Universal City, Texas, appeared before U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez in San Antonio, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of influencing a federal official by threat of murder.
According to court documents, Headley left a message on the victim’s voicemail system in Washington, D.C. on July 11, 2017, threatening to murder the member of Congress as well as the member’s family.
Following his arrest on July 13, 2017, Headley told agents that he was upset with the victim’s position on different policies and decided to call and leave a message demonstrating his intent to impede and intimidate the member of Congress.
Headley has remained in federal custody since his arrest and was sentenced to one year confinement, consisting of six months in federal custody followed by six months of home confinement. He will also serve a three-year period of supervised release after completing his home confinement.
The FBI, along with the U.S. Capitol Police, investigated this case, and Assistant United States Attorney Bettina Richardson prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
