James & Attorneys General Vow to Protect Mifepristone

New York Attorney General Letitia James has joined forces with 19 other attorneys general to denounce the Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Martin Makary’s decision to reexamine mifepristone, a crucial abortion medication.

‘For over 25 years, mifepristone has proven its safety and efficacy in the U.S. and globally,’ reads their joint statement. ‘This unnecessary FDA review is based on scientifically baseless claims that disregard decades of research.’

The coalition emphasizes that medical decisions should be guided by science, not political agendas, and vows to take action if mifepristone’s access is challenged.

Attorney General James has a history of advocating for reproductive justice. She recently intervened in a landmark case testing New York’s abortion shield law and sued to prevent the defunding of Planned Parenthood. In June, she also filed a petition urging the FDA to eliminate restrictions on mifepristone.

Joining Attorney General James are attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia. The statement underscores their commitment to protecting reproductive care for all residents.
