New York Attorney General Letitia James has scored a major victory, with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are illegal.
The court ruled in favor of AG James and 11 other states who challenged the legality of the ’emergency’ tariffs, arguing they were imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) without legal authority.
‘These illegal tariffs caused immense economic chaos,’ said Attorney General James. ‘The Supreme Court has agreed that this administration had no right to impose massive new taxes arbitrarily.’
AG James led a coalition of attorneys general from Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont in the lawsuit against the Trump administration.
The Supreme Court’s ruling reverses decisions by lower courts that had also found the tariffs to be illegal. The legal battle began in April 2025 when the coalition sued the Trump administration for imposing massive new tariffs that disrupted the economy.
Attorney General James vowed to continue fighting against destructive policies, stating, ‘I will keep protecting New Yorkers from these kinds of policies that make life less affordable.’
