James Beeks, Assaulting Law Enforcement Officer, Little Rock AR, 2021

WASHINGTON D.C. – Peter Francis Stager of Arkansas has admitted to felony assault on a Metropolitan Police Department officer during the January 6th, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Stager, fueled by election conspiracy theories, wasn’t just present at the riot – he actively participated in the violence, using a flagpole as a weapon against law enforcement.

Court documents detail a brutal scene on the Lower West Terrace. Stager was part of a surging mob that targeted Officer B.M., forcibly pulling him from the police line and down a flight of stairs. While the officer was vulnerable and prone, Stager repeatedly struck him with the flagpole. This wasn’t a spontaneous act; it was a deliberate assault contributing to the chaos that day.

The feds say Stager didn’t stop at physical violence. He was also caught on video spewing hateful rhetoric, directing threats toward those inside the Capitol and calling for violence against anyone he deemed a “traitor.” His words, combined with his actions, paint a picture of a man intent on disrupting the peaceful transfer of power and intimidating those upholding the law.

Stager’s guilty plea comes amidst a massive federal investigation into the January 6th attack. Over 985 individuals have been arrested nationally, and more than 319 face charges related to assaulting or obstructing law enforcement. The feds are still actively pursuing leads and bringing those responsible to account, two and a half years after the event.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is prosecuting the case, with assistance from the Counterterrorism Section of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas. The FBI’s Little Rock and Washington Field Offices spearheaded the investigation, collaborating with the Metropolitan Police Department and U.S. Capitol Police.

Stager is scheduled to be sentenced on July 24, 2023. He faces a significant prison term for his actions. This case serves as a stark reminder that those who attacked the Capitol and targeted law enforcement will be held accountable, no matter where they come from. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing prosecution of those involved in the January 6th insurrection.
