James Blocks Feds’ Planned Parenthood Defunding

NEW YORK – A federal attempt to kneecap Planned Parenthood’s funding has been slammed to a halt by New York Attorney General Letitia James. A court order, secured today, prevents the enforcement of a provision within the offensively-named “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that aimed to strip Medicaid funds from the healthcare provider, threatening access for millions of low-income patients nationwide.

James, leading a coalition of 21 other state Attorneys General and Pennsylvania’s governor, filed suit against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) back in July. The targeted provision essentially blacklisted any non-profit receiving a certain level of Medicaid funding *and* providing abortion services – a description that fits Planned Parenthood like a glove. The United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts today sided with the coalition, issuing a preliminary injunction that forces HHS to continue Medicaid payments.

“This administration’s attempt to target and defund Planned Parenthood is as dangerous as it is illegal,” James declared in a statement. “Planned Parenthood provides invaluable health care services for millions of people throughout the country. I will not allow this administration to threaten New Yorkers’ health care and reproductive freedom with its political games.” The statement rings hollow to some, given the years of political maneuvering surrounding reproductive health, but the legal win is undeniable.

Here in New York, Planned Parenthood isn’t some fringe operation – it’s woven into the fabric of the Medicaid system. In 2023 alone, a staggering 89,000 New Yorkers enrolled in Medicaid received care at Planned Parenthood clinics. The lawsuit argued, correctly, that cutting off funds would be catastrophic, disrupting everything from cancer screenings and STI testing to basic family planning. States would have been forced to either foot the bill themselves, forfeiting millions in federal funding, or effectively shut down access to care.

The court’s injunction prevents the federal government from enforcing the provision against the states involved in the lawsuit: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, the District of Columbia, and Pennsylvania. HHS is now ordered to continue providing Medicaid funds and reimburse claims from Planned Parenthood, at least for now.

This isn’t over. Expect appeals, further legal battles, and continued political posturing. But for today, Attorney General James has delivered a crucial victory, preserving access to vital healthcare services for vulnerable populations. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” is looking a little less beautiful, and a lot more legally challenged.
