NORFOLK, VA – James Edward Sweat, 40, is looking at serious federal time after a jury found him guilty yesterday of running a drug operation out of his Norfolk home and illegally packing firearms. The bust, which went down December 18th, revealed a full-blown drug kit and an arsenal, according to court records.
Cops raiding Sweat’s place found not one, but two guns: a shotgun and a handgun. They also seized six magazines, including a high-capacity 100-round drum. The real poison? 14.3 grams of crack cocaine, fentanyl already packaged for street sales, and enough ammunition to escalate a situation. Three separate kits to *make* drugs were also recovered.
This wasn’t Sweat’s first rodeo with the law. He’s a convicted felon with a past that includes abduction, two robbery convictions, and two prior felony firearm charges. That history alone made the gun possession charges stick.
Sweat’s facing a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, but could get life. Sentencing is scheduled for July 14th. The case was a joint effort by the ATF, Chesapeake PD, and Norfolk PD. It’s also tied into “Operation Take Back America”, a broad DOJ initiative targeting cartels and violent crime.
