In a shocking case of betrayal, a United States Postal Service (USPS) employee has been charged with stealing mail in Jacksonville, Florida. James Gregory Sweat, a 60-year-old resident of Jacksonville, stands accused of taking a greeting card from the mail and stealing cash contained inside.
According to court documents, Sweat committed the crime on June 4, 2021, while serving as a USPS employee. The indictment, which was recently unsealed, charges Sweat with theft of mail by a United States Postal Service employee.
If convicted, Sweat faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
The case is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Scot Morris will be prosecuting the case.
