ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – James Hawley, 36, of Albuquerque, has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for his role in a brazen attempted carjacking that took place in 2019.
The incident unfolded on July 27, 2019, when Hawley attempted to carjack a victim who was stopped at an intersection in Albuquerque. Using a firearm, Hawley pointed it at the victim in an attempt to gain access to their vehicle. Miraculously, the victim was able to escape by speeding through the intersection.
Hawley, who had previously been convicted of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery on a household member with great bodily harm, was later found unconscious by paramedics. Despite his disarmed state, paramedics attempted to render aid, but Hawley was eventually subdued.
As a convicted felon, Hawley was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition. His actions not only broke this law but also put the lives of innocent bystanders at risk.
James Hawley pleaded guilty to the charges on August 9, 2021, and was subsequently sentenced to seven years in prison. Upon his release, he will be subject to three years of supervised release.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy D. Trembley prosecuting the matter.
