James Lampley, Firearms Charges, Pennsylvania 2021

A Williamsport man is facing serious charges after authorities say he possessed a shotgun and a handgun with an obliterated serial number, despite being prohibited from owning firearms due to a prior conviction.

James Lampley, 29, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Harrisburg on firearms charges, announced Acting United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler.

According to the indictment, Lampley possessed the shotgun and handgun in July 2021, which is a clear violation of his rights as a convicted felon. Possessing firearms with an obliterated serial number is a serious offense that can carry severe penalties.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Pennsylvania State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey W. MacArthur is prosecuting the case.

The indictment alleges that Lampley committed the offense while prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior conviction. This charge is a serious one, and if convicted, Lampley could face significant time in prison.

The maximum penalty under federal law for each count is 10 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. The case is being prosecuted as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime.

Lampley is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. A sentence following a finding of guilt will be imposed by the judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
