James Leads AGs in Standing Up to Eco-Justice Block

New York Attorney General Letitia James has joined a multistate coalition in an assertive stance against federal efforts to curtail environmental justice initiatives. In a bold move, the coalition issues guidance affirming both the legality and importance of these programs.

“Communities of color, low-income, and rural areas bear the brunt of our nation’s greatest environmental threats,” James declared. “It is not controversial to address these disparities or fight for our most vulnerable communities’ health.”

The coalition stands firm against federal actions branding eco-justice efforts as illegal, emphasizing that public and private entities remain free to engage in this vital work.

Despite over 40 years of progress since the environmental justice movement’s inception, racial segregation and disinvestment persist, causing ongoing disparities. Studies show these communities face severe health challenges, from lead poisoning to pollution-related asthma and extreme weather events.

James and her fellow attorneys general argue that federal efforts to dismantle environmental justice policies through executive orders and memoranda are illegal and unsupported by the U.S. Constitution or federal laws. They assert that civil rights and environmental laws support public and private initiatives aimed at environmental justice.

The guidance is a direct challenge to the federal administration’s attempts to terminate environmental and climate justice programs, discontinue enforcement actions, and call for legal challenges against state eco-justice legislation. The coalition underscores the need for unity in protecting all communities from environmental dangers and ensuring a healthier future for everyone.
