In a shocking turn of events, James Mwangi Gichura, a 32-year-old resident of Baltimore, Maryland, was arrested in connection with a string of violent crimes that terrorized the city. On December 28, 2012, Gichura was charged with several federal counts, including kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
A federal grand jury in the Maryland District Federal Court handed down the indictment, which outlined a series of brazen attacks that took place between May and November 2012. The victims, all of whom were local residents, were subjected to extreme physical and emotional trauma during the incidents.
Gichura’s arrest was the culmination of a months-long investigation by the FBI and local law enforcement agencies. The defendant was taken into custody without incident and held without bail pending his trial.
On February 10, 2013, Gichura entered a guilty plea to the charges, agreeing to cooperate with authorities in the hopes of receiving a reduced sentence. The court accepted the plea deal, and on April 15, 2013, Gichura was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. The judge also imposed a life term of supervised release, during which time Gichura will be required to undergo psychological evaluation and counseling.
