A Canadian truck driver has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in a large-scale marijuana trafficking ring.
JAMES POSTLETHWAITE, 60, of North Vancouver, BC, Canada, was convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana after a three-day trial in November 2012.
According to court documents, POSTLETHWAITE was a key player in a criminal organization that smuggled marijuana from Canada into the US and cocaine from the US into Canada.
The investigation, which began in May 2010, revealed that the organization was transporting and distributing 1,000 to 2,000 pounds of marijuana and 100 to 200 kilos of cocaine every month.
POSTLETHWAITE’s semi-truck was used to transport the marijuana, which was hidden in a compartment that could hold up to 600 pounds of the drug.
He was arrested on March 9, 2012, as he tried to drive a different truck into the US from Canada at the Eastport, Idaho, Port of Entry.
POSTLETHWAITE has been in custody in the US since his arrest and has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Two dozen people have been charged in the case, with seven already sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
Others sentenced in the case include Jacob Saul Stuart, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and Michael Murphy, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The investigation seized over $2 million and 136 kilograms of cocaine, as well as 1,000 kilograms of marijuana.
The case was investigated by the DEA and was part of an Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation.
