New York – In a decisive victory for the vulnerable, New York Attorney General Letitia James has successfully halted the Trump administration’s attempt to slash $3 billion in critical funding for homelessness programs. The court order, which temporarily blocks the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from imposing new, illegal conditions on Continuum of Care (CoC) funds, ensures that vital support remains accessible to tens of thousands of individuals at risk of losing their homes.
The CoC program is a lifeline for many, providing housing and essential services to veterans, the disabled, and transgender individuals. However, in November, the Trump administration attempted to impose conditions on these grants, including capping funds for permanent supportive housing and excluding programs that serve vulnerable populations. The proposed cuts would have eliminated shelter for an estimated 170,000 people.
Attorney General James led a coalition of 18 other state attorneys general and two governors in lawsuit against the HUD, arguing that the new conditions violated federal law. Today’s court order is a significant win for those fighting homelessness, as it preserves access to over $320 million in funding for New York’s regional CoCs.
In addition to the legal challenge, James expressed her unwavering commitment to protecting these resources. “Continuum of Care funds are essential for keeping families off the streets and providing vital services,” she stated. “We will not allow this administration to undermine this program.”
The ruling in favor of the coalition is a stark reminder that federal policy can have profound real-world implications. It also highlights the ongoing struggle against homelessness, which requires comprehensive support and advocacy.
Joining Attorney General James were attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, and other states, as well as the governors of Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
