James Sumner, Child Pornography, Iowa 2023

Grimy Times has learned that James Sumner, a 49-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been convicted of child pornography charges in a federal court. According to sources, Sumner was found guilty of one count of receipt of child pornography and three counts of possession of child pornography after a four-day trial.

The evidence presented at trial revealed that between 2007 and 2008, Sumner downloaded child pornography using the internet. Furthermore, it was shown that between 2007 and 2011, Sumner possessed child pornography on CDs at his residence in Cedar Rapids.

The jury deliberated for approximately six hours and thirty minutes before returning the guilty verdict. Following the conviction, Sumner was taken into custody by the United States Marshal and will remain in custody pending sentencing.

Sumner faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of fifty years imprisonment, as well as fines totaling $1,000,000 and $400 in special assessments. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender and serve at least five years and up to life on supervised release following any imprisonment.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel and was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

The conviction is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
