NEW YORK – The taxman cometh… and so do the scammers. New York Attorney General Letitia James issued a stark warning today, alerting residents to a surge in tax-related fraud schemes preying on vulnerable taxpayers as the April 15th filing deadline looms. The AG is simultaneously pushing a free alternative, the ‘Direct File’ service, hoping to shield New Yorkers from both the headaches and the financial hit of predatory practices.
According to James’ office, the scams are increasingly sophisticated. Victims are being targeted with aggressive phone calls, emails, and texts falsely claiming they owe back taxes, demanding immediate payment via prepaid debit cards or gift cards – a dead giveaway. Legitimate government agencies never operate this way. Other schemes involve bogus promises of free tax preparation services that quickly morph into hefty, hidden fees. The AG’s office estimates that roughly 3.4 million New Yorkers could be eligible for the ‘Direct File’ program, potentially saving them around $260 in preparation costs.
“While tax season can be stressful, New Yorkers deserve the peace of mind knowing they’re protected from scams and won’t be fleeced out of hundreds of dollars just to file their taxes,” stated Attorney General James. “The ‘Direct File’ program is a secure and straightforward way to file taxes for free and save significant money. I urge everyone to be vigilant against scammers looking to exploit tax season and to report any suspected fraud to my office.”
The AG’s office detailed a laundry list of red flags taxpayers should watch for. These include threats of arrest or deportation for unpaid debts, demands for immediate payment using unconventional methods, and unsolicited communications requesting personal or financial information. James specifically warned against falling for claims that IRS refunds were issued in error and require repayment – legitimate notices will always be delivered in writing, outlining the debt and the agency involved. Beware of preparers promising unusually fast refunds in exchange for exorbitant fees; if it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is.
To qualify for ‘Direct File,’ New Yorkers need to have earned up to $200,000 in 2024, or $250,000 if filing jointly. The process is simple: first, verify eligibility for the New York State ‘Direct File’ program, then check IRS requirements. Eligible taxpayers can initiate their federal return on the IRS ‘Direct File’ website and will then be seamlessly directed to the New York State program to file state taxes. More information is available on the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website.
Beyond utilizing ‘Direct File,’ James’ office emphasized the importance of sound financial hygiene during tax season. Legitimate government organizations will *never* threaten legal action or demand immediate payment via unconventional means. Report any suspicious activity to the Attorney General’s office immediately. Don’t be a victim; protect your money and your information this tax season. The AG’s office can be reached through their website for reporting fraud or seeking assistance.
