NORFOLK, VA – A Norfolk man, Jamique Mays, 30, faces a lengthy prison sentence after a federal jury found him guilty of conspiring to rob a Virginia Beach gun store in 2017. The robbery targeted a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) and involved a coordinated effort to steal cash earned from a weekend gun show in Philadelphia. The verdict came down today, signaling a major win for federal prosecutors.
According to evidence presented at trial, Mays teamed up with his then-girlfriend, Jaclyn Inge, 44, and an accomplice, Desmond Littlejohn, 37, to plot the heist. The trio surveilled Inge’s workplace, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. On October 9, 2017, they ambushed two employees as they arrived for work, brandishing firearms and demanding a black bag containing the weekend’s earnings. The brazen robbery unfolded quickly, with the suspects fleeing the scene after securing the cash.
Investigators quickly zeroed in on the crew. A black ski mask discarded during the escape proved crucial, with Littlejohn’s DNA found on the fabric. Perhaps most damningly, Mays himself confessed to the robbery in a later Facebook Messenger conversation with a friend. The evidence, combined with testimony, painted a clear picture of a calculated and violent crime. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) played a key role in the investigation.
Mays now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years in prison, with a potential maximum sentence of life. While actual sentences often fall below the maximum, Judge John A. Gibney Jr. will consider U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors before imposing a sentence on April 19, 2024. This isn’t Mays’ first brush with the law; he is already a convicted felon. The robbery charges are in addition to that prior record.
This wasn’t a solo operation. Littlejohn was previously convicted of the same charges in February 2019 and received a hefty 189-month prison sentence. Inge, who illegally purchased and possessed the firearm used by Mays, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 78 months in October 2020. All three conspirators will now pay the price for their actions. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kristin Bird and Alyssa Miller, with Miller also serving as a Virginia Assistant Attorney General.
U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber, Attorney General Jason S. Miyares, ATF Special Agent in Charge Craig Kailimai, and Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate jointly announced the verdict. The prosecution emphasized that this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence nationwide. This conviction sends a clear message: those who prey on licensed firearms businesses and endanger the public will be brought to justice.
