A 20-year-old Port Arthur man, Jamon Roshaud Brooks, is facing federal charges after allegedly brandishing a firearm during a violent robbery at a Beaumont business. The incident, which occurred on December 21, 2018, targeted a commercial establishment located at 2150 Stillwater Drive, authorities confirmed.
Brooks was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Texas on May 1, 2019, on two counts: Hobbs Act robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence. The indictment, unsealed by U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown, marks a critical escalation in the case, moving it from state to federal jurisdiction due to the business’s involvement in interstate commerce.
According to the indictment, Brooks allegedly pointed a firearm at employees or patrons during the robbery, creating immediate terror and facilitating the theft. The use of a weapon in a robbery that disrupts commercial activity triggers federal jurisdiction under the Hobbs Act, a key tool in prosecuting violent interference with business operations.
If convicted, Brooks faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison for the robbery charge, with an additional seven years to be served consecutively for brandishing the firearm. No plea has been entered yet, and the case remains active in federal court.
The investigation was a joint operation involving the Beaumont Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the Port Arthur Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell James is leading the prosecution.
As the case proceeds, federal officials remind the public that indictments are formal accusations, not proof of guilt. Jamon Roshaud Brooks is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
