Janet Wheeler, Theft of Government Funds, Tennessee 2014

MEMPHIS, TN – In a shocking case of financial deceit, Memphis woman Janet Wheeler, 48, of Cordova, Tennessee, pleaded guilty to theft of government funds yesterday.

According to the criminal information and plea recital, between February 2009 and December 2011, Wheeler participated in the Housing Choice Voucher Program operated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. An investigation revealed that Wheeler made false representations to the Memphis Housing Authority, resulting in her receiving over $30,000 in federal housing assistance to which she was not entitled.

Wheeler faces a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for December 5, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. before United States District Judge John T. Fowlkes.

The case was investigated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Pritchard on behalf of the government.
