Jared Michael Romero, a 22-year-old Wyoming man, faces the harsh reality of his actions after causing a drunk driving crash that resulted in the death of his 19-year-old passenger, Clay Walters.
On October 13, 2015, Romero was sentenced in federal court to 10 months of home confinement and 2 years of Supervised Release on one count of involuntary manslaughter and one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The incident occurred when Romero, who was reportedly drunk at the time, got behind the wheel and crashed, leading to the tragic loss of Walters’ life. Another victim, who survived the crash, incurred $145,489.86 in medical expenses.
Romero was ordered to pay the full amount in restitution, in addition to a $200 special assessment. His sentence also includes participating in victim impact panels and other anti-drunk driving forums, where he will speak publicly about the consequences of drunk driving.
As part of his sentence, Romero will undergo an alcohol evaluation, follow through with all treatment recommendations, participate in cognitive and behavioral treatment, and submit to searches of his person and residence upon reasonable cause.
Romero’s case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol. His actions serve as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving.
In total, Romero was sentenced to 10 months of home confinement, 2 years of Supervised Release, and ordered to pay $145,489.86 in restitution and a $200 special assessment.
