Jason Lee Robinson Indicted in 7-State Bank Heist

A Kentucky man accused of ripping off seven banks across six states—including a $1,900 heist at a Capital Bank in Aventura—is locked up and facing federal charges. Jason Lee Robinson, 40, of Pikeville, Kentucky, was indicted by a grand jury on one count of bank robbery following the December 28, 2018, stickup in South Florida.

The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Ariana Fajardo Orshan and FBI Miami Field Office Special Agent in Charge George L. Piro, marks the latest development in a cross-country crime spree that spanned from Florida to Utah in under three weeks. Robinson is already in custody and was previously charged via criminal complaint under Case No. 19-mj-2082.

Court records allege Robinson hit the Aventura Capital Bank first, then moved fast: SunTrust in Asheville, North Carolina on January 2, 2019; Mountain Commerce Bank in Johnson City, Tennessee on January 4; U.S. Bank in Mount Juliet, Tennessee on January 8; Trustmark Bank in Prattville, Alabama on January 10; Fifth Third Bank in Mount Vernon, Illinois on January 14; and Wells Fargo in Price Branch, Utah on January 17. Each bank was insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Robinson, 40, faces a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted on the single count of bank robbery under Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a). No weapons were reported in any of the robberies, but the brazen pattern prompted nationwide coordination among FBI field offices.

U.S. Attorney Fajardo Orshan credited the FBI’s Miami Field Office for leading the investigation and specifically thanked FBI teams in Charlotte, Knoxville, Memphis, Mobile, Springfield, Salt Lake City, Price Branch, Denver, and Louisville for their role in tracking Robinson’s movements. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa H. Miller.

An indictment is not a conviction—Robinson is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Related court documents are available through the Southern District of Florida’s public docket at www.flsd.uscourts.gov or via PACER at http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov.
