Crime: Funding for school safety programs in Colorado has taken a dark turn, with over $83 million in grants up for grabs to combat threats of violence.
U.S. Attorney Jason R. Dunn made the announcement in Denver, with the funding available through the Office of Justice Programs, the federal government’s leading source of public safety funding and crime victim assistance in state, local and tribal jurisdictions.
According to Dunn, the funding is a crucial step in supporting school safety to prevent violence and protect children. "We have learned first-hand how important school safety is in Colorado," he said. "It is important that the appropriate agencies consider applying for these funds, as we should do everything possible to support school safety."
Katharine T. Sullivan, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs, echoed Dunn’s sentiments, stating that school violence is no longer an abstract threat but has become a tragic reality in too many of America’s communities.
The funding is available through a number of programs, including Research and Evaluation on School Safety, which has $5 million available and a deadline of April 13, 2020. Another program, STOP Act School Violence Program (FY20), has $71.4 million available, also with a deadline of April 13, 2020. The Strategies to Support Children Exposed to Violence program has $7 million available, with a deadline of April 27, 2020.

The funding opportunities are part of the Administration’s top domestic priorities, with the goal of ensuring that communities have access to innovative and diverse solutions to combat school violence.
