BEAUMONT, Texas – The grim reaper has been summoned in Jasper County as Shane Dwayne Hadnot, a 28-year-old local, faces federal charges for his alleged role in a drug deal that led to a man’s death. U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced the charges against Hadnot, who is accused of conspiracy and distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death.
Hadnot was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 6, 2014, following an investigation into the mysterious disappearance and subsequent death of Alfred Wright, also from Jasper. Wright’s body was found near his clothes, which were discovered miles from where he was last seen. Phone records and witness statements point to Hadnot as the supplier of cocaine to Wright.
According to the indictment, Wright had exchanged 20 text messages with Hadnot in the days leading up to his disappearance, including a request for drugs sent just hours before Wright vanished. Toxicology tests later confirmed that cocaine, methamphetamine, and Xanax were present in Wright’s system at the time of death.
Hadnot was arrested on August 7, 2014, and is set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Giblin today. If convicted, he could spend from 20 years to life in federal prison for each charge.
This harrowing case is under the scrutiny of the Texas Rangers, FBI, and DEA, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Brit Featherston and John B. Ross prosecuting the case. The grim truth is that a grand jury indictment is not evidence of guilt, but it’s a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the shadowy world of drug trafficking.
As justice seeks to unravel this tragedy, Hadnot’s fate hangs in the balance. Will Texas see retribution for a death linked to its drug trade, or will another life be lost in the ongoing battle against illegal substances?
