Jasper Spires Gets 35 Years for Metro Murder of Kevin Sutherland

Jasper Spires, 21, of Washington, D.C., is headed to prison for 35 years after pleading guilty to the brutal July 4, 2015, stabbing murder of 24-year-old Kevin Sutherland aboard a downtown-bound Red Line Metrorail train. The attack, which unfolded in broad daylight between the Rhode Island Avenue and NOMA-Gallaudet University stations, marked the first homicide ever recorded on a Metro train, shaking public confidence in the system and leaving witnesses traumatized.

Spires pled guilty on October 19, 2017, to first-degree murder while armed (premeditated), under a plea agreement calling for a 30 to 35-year sentence. Today, Superior Court Judge Judith Bartnoff imposed the full 35-year term, followed by five years of supervised release. The sentencing brings a measure of closure to a case that horrified the D.C. community and exposed vulnerabilities in mass transit safety.

According to facts presented at the plea hearing, Spires entered the Rhode Island Avenue – Brentwood Metro station just behind Sutherland at approximately 12:43 p.m. Surveillance footage captured Spires donning gloves as he stepped onto the platform. Both men boarded the second car of the same train. Once the train was in motion, Spires approached Sutherland, snatched his cellphone, then launched a vicious, sustained knife attack. Sutherland was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen, back, arms, and sides before collapsing to the floor—where Spires continued to stab and kick him, even striking him in the head with his own phone.

There were nine other passengers in the car. As the bloodbath unfolded, terrified riders tried to alert the train operator. Spires turned on them, brandishing the knife and shouting at one witness to “Shut up.” He robbed two others, including a 76-year-old man. The scene inside the train car was described as chaotic and terrifying, with blood spattered across seats and floors as the train approached the next stop.

When the train arrived at NOMA-Gallaudet University station, Spires fled down the stairs and disappeared into the streets. He was later apprehended thanks to swift investigative work by the Metropolitan Police Department and Metro Transit Police. The collaboration led to his arrest and, ultimately, his conviction in one of the most high-profile violent crimes in Metro history.

“Kevin Sutherland was on his way to a Fourth of July celebration when he was robbed and murdered in the middle of the day,” said U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu. “Other passengers were terrorized and remain traumatized to this day. Thanks to the excellent work of our law enforcement partners, Jasper Spires was arrested for this senseless crime. Today’s sentence will keep this predator off our streets for decades to come.”
