INDIANAPOLIS- The man who terrorized local businesses during a violent robbery spree has been handed a 30-year federal prison sentence. Javonte Smith, 34, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of armed robbery and firearm violations.
Smith’s crime spree began on November 21, 2023, when he robbed the Family Dollar store at W. 38th St. Over the next few weeks, he targeted five more businesses, including Walmart and McDonald’s, making off with a total of $14,797 in cash.
During his final robbery on December 2nd, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers followed Smith to a Motel 6 and arrested him. They found numerous disguises, including a wig, mask, and gloves, in his vehicle, along with the keys to a stolen GMC Terrain and a black Taurus handgun.
Smith had previously been convicted of multiple felonies, including resisting law enforcement, fraud, robbery, and DWI, making him ineligible to possess a firearm. Tom Wheeler, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, stated, “This defendant terrorized hard-working people just trying to do their jobs.”
The FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge, Timothy O’Malley, added, “The sentence reflects the serious consequences awaiting those who choose violence and intimidation to commit their crimes.” The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt imposed the sentence, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Nate Walter prosecuted the case. This outcome sends a clear message that such violent acts will not be tolerated in Indianapolis.
