In a shocking display of reckless disregard for human life, Jeffe Coleman, a 30-year-old man from Washington D.C., was handed the maximum punishment for driving under the influence. On January 7, 1924, Coleman careened through the streets of the nation’s capital, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. At 9th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Coleman struck 77-year-old Patrick Naughiton, sending the elderly man tumbling to the ground. Undeterred, Coleman sped away, only to crash into a streetcar at 14th Street and Avenue.
Police Judge Schuldt was not impressed with Coleman’s antics, calling it the most flagrant traffic violation he had ever seen. The judge slammed Coleman with a whopping $440 fine, or 100 days in jail, in addition to a straight 30-day sentence. Coleman was also charged with driving while drunk, two counts of colliding with other vehicles, and disobeying an officer’s signal.
This is not the first time Coleman has seen the inside of a jail cell. He has been charged with numerous other crimes in the past, including driving under the influence and reckless endangerment.
But Coleman was not the only drunk driver to feel the wrath of the law. William Harris, a 25-year-old man from Washington D.C., was given a 30-day sentence and a $340 fine, or 100 days in jail, for driving while drunk and colliding with another vehicle. Meyer Johnson, a 28-year-old man from Washington D.C., forfeited $340 for driving while drunk and colliding with another vehicle.
The consequences of drunk driving are severe and far-reaching. In addition to putting innocent lives at risk, drunk drivers can face serious legal consequences, including fines, jail time, and the loss of their driver’s license. It’s a risk not worth taking, as the example of Jeffe Coleman and his fellow drunk drivers demonstrates.
