Jefferson Parish Man Sentenced for False Statement to USCG

New Orleans, Louisiana – Derrick Fremen, a 51-year-old resident of Jefferson Parish, faces the consequences of his deceit after being sentenced to thirty-six months probation and paying a mandatory $100 special assessment fee for making a false statement to the United States Coast Guard. The sentence came on June 26, 2024, following Fremen’s guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Lance Africk.

According to court documents, Fremen was no stranger to the sea. A licensed merchant mariner and holder of a 100-Ton USCG master’s license, he applied for a vessel job in late 2018. However, his bid was thwarted by a failed drug screening. In response, instead of facing the music, Fremen resorted to altering a prescription to the Coast Guard on July 1, 2019, attempting to justify his failed drug test.

Investigation into Fremen’s deception was conducted by Special Agents of the USCG Investigative Service, Gulf Region. Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis is credited with overseeing the prosecution in this case.

The conviction sends a stern message about the integrity required within maritime professions and the serious consequences that await those who attempt to deceive federal agencies.

With this sentence, Fremen’s future as a merchant mariner is now in doubt, as he must serve his probationary term while also facing the societal repercussions of his dishonesty. The Coast Guard remains vigilant in upholding the integrity of maritime operations, and this case serves as a reminder to all within the industry that honesty is non-negotiable.
