Jeffery John Plzak, 52, Sentenced to 22 Months in Prison for Lying About Employees’ Wages
A Loretto man has been sentenced to 22 months in federal prison for felony false statements in connection with prevailing wage violations. Jeffery John Plzak, 52, was sentenced on March 3, 2015, before Judge Patrick J. Schiltz in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, Minn.
According to court documents, Plzak and his spouse run Honda Electric, Inc., a company based in Loretto, Minnesota. Honda Electric bids on construction projects, including highway and road projects, that are federally and state funded.
The company was required to pay its electricians and other laborers the prevailing wage rate. However, Plzak knowingly lied about paying the prevailing wage to the United States Department of Transportation – Federal Highway Administration and to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Plzak admitted to underpaying his employees over $241,000 in a series of projects between 2010 and 2013. He also admitted to submitting false certified payroll reports to the government agencies.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David M. Genrich prosecuted the case. The investigation was conducted by the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Labor Compliance Unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Plzak was ordered to pay $241,000 in restitution, pay a fine, and was placed on one year of supervised release to follow the prison term.
