Jeffrey Edward Ownby, 30, of Medford, Oregon, is headed to federal prison for 198 months after terrorizing three banks with a sawed-off shotgun and a string of chilling threats. On February 9, 2017, U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane delivered the sentence for Ownby’s reign of armed robbery across Medford, calling the crimes brazen and dangerous. Ownby was convicted on charges of armed bank robbery, use of a sawed-off shotgun in a violent felony, and unlawful possession of a destructive device.
The first heist struck on May 16, 2014, at the Bank of the Cascades. Dressed in a gray bandana and carrying a drawstring bag, Ownby stormed in, waved a handgun, and screamed, “get on the ground.” He flashed the weapon at customers and staff, repeating, “you know what this is,” before demanding money. Employees stuffed $5,878 into his bag as he stood guard with the loaded firearm. He vanished into the streets, leaving behind a scene of fear and chaos.
Not done, Ownby returned on December 22, 2014, this time at Washington Federal Bank, masked with a fake beard, camo headwear, and clear glasses. He brandished the same type of handgun, slammed a backpack on the counter, and growled, “you know exactly what this is.” Tellers, trapped under the threat of violence, handed over $7,969. Again, he slipped away—law enforcement scrambling but empty-handed.
Then came the final, most dangerous robbery. On April 1, 2015, Ownby entered America West Bank wearing a hat and another fake beard. This time, he pulled a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun from his backpack, pointed it at bank personnel, and bellowed, “you know what this is.” The sight of the shortened, high-lethality weapon sent terror through the room. Tellers complied, loading $2,375 into his backpack before he fled.
The break came fast. Police released surveillance images to local media. Former co-workers of Ownby recognized his build and mannerisms from a news report and tipped off investigators. On April 2, 2015, police raided his Medford home. Inside, they found the sawed-off shotgun and most of the $2,375 stolen the day before. In his truck, they uncovered Molotov cocktails in a bag and a stash of robbery disguises. Ownby confessed to all three robberies during questioning, admitting he’d pawned the handgun used in the first two heists. Authorities later recovered it from a local pawnshop.
The case was jointly investigated by the Medford Police Department and the FBI, a testament to the escalating threat Ownby posed. Prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Judith Harper and Byron Chatfield, the government secured full accountability. Ownby must now serve 198 months behind bars, pay restitution to his victims, and face five years of supervised release upon his eventual return to society. In the shadow of his crimes, the message is clear: armed robbery carries a sentence as long and hard as the fear it inflicts.
