Jeremiah Ray Johnson, Assault, New Mexico 2013

A 39-year-old resident of Sheepsprings, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to a federal misdemeanor assault charge in connection with a violent incident that occurred in 2013.

Jeremiah Ray Johnson, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury following a fight at a residence in San Juan County, New Mexico, on April 3, 2013.

According to court documents, Johnson punched and stabbed a Navajo man with a knife during the altercation, leaving the victim hospitalized.

Johnson was indicted on August 12, 2014 and initially charged with a felony. However, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge during a hearing in federal court in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

As part of the plea agreement, Johnson faces a statutory maximum penalty of one year in federal prison and up to five years of probation. A sentencing hearing has yet to be scheduled.

The case was investigated by the Farmington office of the FBI and the Shiprock office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Wishard is prosecuting the case.
