Jermaine N. Sails, Cell Phone Theft, Alaska 2018

Anchorage man sentenced to 2 years in prison for stealing hundreds of cell phones from the mail and possessing a firearm.

Jermaine N. Sails, a 42-year-old Anchorage resident, was sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge Ralph R. Beistline to serve two years in federal prison for stealing approximately 400 cell phones from the U.S. mail and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Sails, a former supervisor at International Bridge, Inc., had access to a secure storage area where he would steal mail parcels containing cell phones. He would then sell the stolen phones through various means, including Craigslist, for an average of $150 each.

Agents with the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, began conducting surveillance of the secure storage area in August 2017, with the assistance of management at International Bridge. Sails was caught in the act of stealing three cell phones on August 31, 2017, and a loaded 9mm handgun was discovered in his vehicle during a search after his arrest.

Sails pleaded guilty to one count of Interfering with United States mail matter and one count of felon in possession of a firearm in June 2018. In addition to his 2-year prison sentence, Sails was ordered to pay $50,633.11 in restitution for the value of the stolen cell phones and was placed on a 3-year period of supervised release.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, with the assistance of management at International Bridge, Inc. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Bottini.

Sails’ sentence is a reminder of the serious consequences of theft and gun possession. The Anchorage community can be assured that those who commit such crimes will be held accountable.
