A Carlsbad man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in a significant drug trafficking operation. Jermaine Ryan Alvarez, 38, was found guilty of possession with intent to distribute more than 100 grams of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of heroin and one count of possession with intent to distribute 50 grams and more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine.
According to court records, Alvarez was under investigation since October 19, 2020, after law enforcement received information that he was selling drugs out of a shed on a property where he was residing in Carlsbad. The following day, agents obtained and executed a court search warrant for the shed, where they found and seized 92.14 net grams of pure methamphetamine and 200.78 net grams of heroin.
In his plea agreement, Alvarez admitted that the drugs were his and that he intended to distribute them. The court found this admission to be a key factor in the sentencing, as it demonstrated Alvarez’s involvement in the drug trafficking operation.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Las Cruces District Office and the Pecos Valley Drug Task Force investigated this case with assistance from the Carlsbad Police Department and the Eddy County Sheriff Office. Assistant United States Attorney Renee Camacho prosecuted the case.
Alvarez pleaded guilty on June 28, 2021, and was subsequently sentenced to nine years in prison. Upon his release from prison, he will be subject to four years of supervised release.
This sentencing serves as a reminder of the severity of drug trafficking crimes and the consequences that come with them. The efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors in this case have led to a significant disruption in the flow of illicit substances in the area, and it is hoped that this sentencing will serve as a deterrent to others who may be considering similar activities.
