Raleigh, NC – 9-Year Sentence for Felon in Possession of Ammunition
A 30-year-old felon, Jermel Trevon Williams, was sentenced to 115 months in prison after being found guilty of possession of ammunition by a felon. The conviction is a result of the ongoing Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP) initiative, a collaborative effort between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
According to court documents, on August 7, 2023, officers from the Elizabeth City Police Department responded to a shooting outside a downtown bar in Elizabeth City. Surveillance footage revealed Williams and another individual discharging firearms. Officers recovered five 9mm shell casings and two .45 caliber shell casings from the area.
On October 29, 2023, officers with the Raleigh Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a window tint violation. Williams was a passenger in the car, and officers discovered two marijuana roaches in plain view. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of a digital scale, a stolen 9mm handgun, and two baggies of marijuana. Williams admitted to owning the contents of the vehicle.
Williams is a previously convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing ammunition. His conviction is a key result of the VCAP initiative, which aims to address the most significant drivers of violent crime through focused enforcement and interagency coordination.
U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III sentenced Williams to 115 months in prison after he pled guilty to the charge on November 22, 2024. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, ECPD, and RPD investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney John Newby prosecuted it.
