A deadly crash on the Lake Shore railroad near Adrian, Michigan, has claimed the life of conductor Jerome B. Huddler, a seasoned railroader with six previous wrecks under his belt. Huddler’s charmed life had become a familiar jest among his peers, but fate had other plans. The collision, which occurred at Chase’s crossing, 15 miles north of Adrian, left Huddler and brakeman Coultland Prince dead, and three others injured. According to reports, the combination train had left Tecumseh bound for Adrian ahead of schedule. The work train, with engineer I. J. Stoddard and brakeman A. B. Fountain, was not as fortunate. The impact was severe, with Fountain suffering severe bruising, while Stoddard was left bruised and cut.
Matthew Niss, an employee on the passenger car, was also injured in the crash. The victims’ families are still reeling from the tragedy, and the railroaders’ community is mourning the loss of two of its own.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, but initial reports suggest that human error may have played a role in the collision. As the railroads continue to expand and modernize, the risk of accidents like this one remains a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who work on the tracks.
