Colombo Crime Family Member Pleads Guilty
A high-ranking member of the Colombo organized crime family pleaded guilty to racketeering charges in a New York federal court yesterday.
Jerry Ciauri, also known as ‘Fat Jerry,’ admitted to engaging in a racketeering conspiracy that included extortionate collection of extensions of credit. According to court filings, Ciauri made extortionate loans to six victims and used threatening means to collect payments, including once threatening to shoot a loansharking partner and slashing a victim’s tires in the middle of the night.
Ciauri, 59, faces up to 20 years in prison when sentenced. Several other members of the Colombo crime family have also pleaded guilty to racketeering charges in recent weeks, including Vito Difalco, Salvatore Disano, and Joseph Maratea.
The guilty plea was announced by Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, William F. Sweeney, Jr., Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI), and James P. O’Neill, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD).
The case is being handled by the Office’s Organized Crime & Gangs Section, with Assistant United States Attorneys Elizabeth A. Geddes and Mathew S. Miller leading the prosecution.
