Jesus Enrique Gonzales Torres, Credit Card Skimming, Louisiana 2016

A Cuban national has been sentenced for his role in a credit card skimming operation in the New Orleans area.

Jesus Enrique Gonzales Torres, 24, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit access device fraud and aggravated identity theft.

According to court records, Gonzales Torres and two codefendants were arrested in April 2016 by the United States Coast Guard while attempting to flee to Cuba. They had been living in Florida before traveling to the New Orleans area to steal credit card information.

The defendants admitted to possessing card skimming devices, a card encoding machine, a card embossing machine, and a laptop computer containing stolen credit card information. They had planned to place skimming devices on gas pumps in the New Orleans area.

Gonzales Torres was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $7,873.97 jointly and severally with his codefendants and a $100 special assessment.

This is the first sentencing in the case, which has resulted in guilty pleas from six defendants. The investigation was led by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, the United States Secret Service, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Gonzales Torres is currently serving his sentence. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting personal financial information and being vigilant against credit card skimming.

In the New Orleans area, residents are advised to regularly check their credit card statements for any suspicious activity and to report any concerns to the authorities.
