In a shocking turn of events, Jesus Pons, a former Miami-Dade County employee, pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Pons, a computer services manager at the General Services Administration (GSA), admitted to receiving illegal kickback payments from county vendors Data Industries and Paradyne Consulting Services (Paradyne) between 2007 and 2011.
According to court filings, Pons approved payments from Miami-Dade County to Data Industries and Paradyne for consulting work that was never done. In exchange for these illegal kickbacks, Pons earned a staggering $1,666,998, which he failed to report on his tax returns. This resulted in a tax loss of $556,254 for the U.S. government.
Pons’s scheme came to light after an investigation by the IRS-Criminal Investigation division. The case is being prosecuted by Trial Attorneys Jeffrey McLellan and Erin Pulice of the Tax Division.
The defendant faces up to a statutory maximum sentence of five years in prison at his sentencing on December 17. This harsh penalty serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and corruption within government institutions.
