Washington – In a resounding victory for academic prowess and financial insight, a four-member team from James Madison University College of Business (JMU) has claimed the top honor in the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) Second Annual Academic Challenge. The FDIC recognized this stellar group—comprising Noah Vanhoy, Sara Kate Garman, Emelia Potteiger, and Nicolas Gonzalez—for their exceptional analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the U.S. banking sector. The team was mentored by Carl Larsson, a faculty member who guided them to deliver a profound examination that impressed the FDIC judges.
“The Academic Challenge is an essential part of our engagement with the academic community,” said Diane Ellis, Director of FDIC’s Division of Insurance and Research. “We hope this inspires students to continue their studies in fields like economics, finance, accounting, or law, which offer valuable perspectives on banking and financial sector supervision.”
The competition featured two rounds. The initial round required teams to utilize multiple public data sources for a comprehensive written submission. In the second phase, finalists presented their findings, facing rigorous questioning from a panel of experts in banking and bank supervision. This year’s challenge saw a competitive field with notable institutions such as the University of Chicago, SUNY Geneseo, the University of Oregon, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill among others.
The JMU team’s victory underscores the university’s commitment to excellence in financial education and research. The FDIC’s Center for Financial Research, which hosted the challenge, continues to foster a dialogue between academia and industry through such programs. This annual event not only rewards academic achievement but also contributes to a more informed future of financial services.
