John A. Cruz, Methamphetamine Distribution, Guam 2014

A Guam couple has been sentenced for their roles in a methamphetamine distribution ring.

On March 6, 2014, Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood handed down the sentences in the District Court of Guam.

John A. Cruz, 47, and his wife Mae Tedtaotao Cruz, 45, both residents of Yona, Guam, were found guilty of conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine and using, carrying or possessing a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

John A. Cruz received a 78-month sentence for the methamphetamine charge and an additional five years for the firearms charge, which will run consecutively. He was also ordered to pay a $200 special assessment fee, complete 400 hours of community service, and serve five years of supervised release.

Mae Tedtaotao Cruz was sentenced to 27 months imprisonment for her role in the conspiracy charge, as well as 400 hours of community service, a $100 special assessment fee, and five years of supervised release.

The couple’s arrest came after postal inspectors intercepted an Express Mail package containing 86 grams of 91.1% pure ice on October 27, 2011. Agents then secured a warrant to search their residence, where they found $38,000 in cash, five firearms, and several vehicles, which have since been forfeited.

The case was investigated by special agents from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Department of Homeland Security/Homeland Security Investigations, as well as officers from the Guam Police Department and the Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Clyde Lemons prosecuted the case.
